Kenmore Power Miser 5 52gal Water Heater not heating enough?

Our water heater is no longer producing hot water, the water is warmish but does not last, not sure of the age of the heater as was already installed when we moved in does anyone have suggestions of what the problem may be and how to repair.

Thanks

The electric heating elements are bad
What makes it a power miser is about 3/8 in extra insulation and maybe smaller heating elements ,
it still takes X amount of energy to heat water to Y temp.

there are or should be 2 covers on the side of the heater. 1 screw holds the cover on. Underneath each cover is a control for the thermostat. Make sure both are set at the same temp. About 125 degrees should be ok for you. There should be a mark for this temp. Turn the breaker off to the heater if it makes you less scared to take the cover off. Just be careful what you touch if you don’t turn it off.

there should be a thermostat on the water heater. Also make sure the supply line valve to the water heater is fully open. You will know which one by feeling for the cold pipe.

You mentioned you live in an apartment complex. You must find out if others are sharing your hot water. If not, and if your water heater is electric, yes there is a knob that you move right or left depending whether you want hot water or not so hot. About the man being full of you know what only you can answer that statement.

First, ask yourself….Is the water hot enough? Or does is just feel pretty warm? If you need hotter water, yes it needs to be turned up. If your water is hot enough, then perhaps something is wrong with your water heater. If it just takes a long time to heat up again, maybe the heating elements are coated with mineral deposits, or maybe only one of the two elements is working… If it turns out to be one of those things, it can be fixed, but turning it up won’t solve your problem…

The first thing that you need to determine is if your water heater provides hot water to your apartment only. Some cheap landlords try to save money and have one heater serving more than one apartment. If the heater is too small it will not keep up with demand. You need to check and see if your water heater is providing hot water to your apartment only, and you also need to see if the gas line to your water heater is going to your heater only. Beware of cheap landlords, and don’t believe the maintenance man – the landlord signs his check!

Get a knowledgable friend to check this out for you. Good luck.
