Mains pressure hot water storage tank?

What would one of those cost me? Where would I get it?

It’s for passive solar water heating. The idea is to put it upstream of the combi boiler, and heat it either directly or with a coil from the solar water heater. The combi boiler runs at mains pressure of course.

How do I arrange things to that the hot water gets to expand when it gets hot?

Is there anything else wrong with this that will make something explode or otherwise embarrass me?

You can do what I think you are trying to do, and the correct equipment is available. You may need a heat exchanger, not sure how succesful this will be at such low relative temps. Solar hot water heating is used as pre heating before the boiler, as it only gives a small rise in temp. this is not normally done at mains pressure, I don’t think the water regs would permit this. A combi boiler does not, as I understand, have to be at mains pressure…this is not a complete answer….need to have a check in the relevant water regs for your country.

Your question seems to ask not what colors work best but why they work best.

The more sunlight a color absorbs the better and the more is reflected the less efficient the heater is.

So black and dark colors should work best and white and light colors should do poorly.

Having reflectors to concentrate the heat energy at the point of heating is also a consideration. Captive air (or a vacuum) around the heated material also helps hold the heat once it is captured.

The diference between plastic pipe or metal pipe is not a big factor in the efficiency of a solar heater. The conductivity of the pipe is a small consideration in the over all heat transfer. Maybe that should be one of the experiements you should do as a part of your project. Determine the difference between the two materials.

I am not sure of the extent of your experiment. If you are speaking of "solar" but you are not using shaved silicon solar energy panels – and JUST the energy of the sun, you need BLACK as a colour in general; black absorbs energy. FYI – white will stay "relatively" cool in the sun. Material – hmm – perhaps a shallow – large surface area – reservoir emptying into a larger metallic reservoir as a storage reservoir – which is painted black – but again I am not sure of what you are doing here. Metal or plastic would retain heat better than most things – but again, black is the answer.

mother Jones magazine on line had a plan for a solar water heater, it’s allot of work.
All these heaters use flat black to absorb as much heat energy from the sun as passable and case with a reflective inner liner to direct more heat at the pipe(s) or container.
you may look at the units used to heat pools for example.
most require a electric pump, so it may not be financially feasible to have one. Good Luck

black absorbs heat the best. And metals conduct heat most efficiently but this can work in both directions, ie heat gained and lost through conduction.

flexible black plastic pipe under glass or clear plastic film would be good…placed on a black surface (wood or cardboard, not metal) or if you use a metal mounting surface, place a course of foam insulation under it to slow the heat conductance.

But if you are just trying to keep it simple, then use cardboard painted black, covered with clear plastic film and black plastic pipes sandwiched between the 2.
