Can diesel fuel be added to a home heating tank as a substitute to heating oil if I only need a couple gallons?

yep, the same stuff, home fuel has color added to it so truckers can’t use it as there are no road taxes on home heating oil.

    yep, the same stuff, home fuel has color added to it so truckers can’t use it as there are no road taxes on home heating oil.

    Yes. It is the same. The only difference is that one gets color added so that they authorities could know the difference if truckers are using home heating oil instead of Diesel because it is cheaper (less taxes).

    While they can be the same, they do have somewhat different standards. Diesel fuel is taxed, while heating oil is not.

    They are, except that they’re different colors. If you get caught using heating oil in a road vehicle the crime is tax evasion, since you don’t pay highway tax for furnace oil. They might check you at a truck stop or state border. Has any inpsector examined what your heater is using? Ever? I won’t tell.

    I can tell you that I would not recommend it. I don’t know if they add any thing to heating oil. But I can tell you that diesel fuel comes in 2 grades, auto grade and farm grade. The difference is the amount of sulfur contained in the fuel.
