How many gallons are in a standard heating oil tank?

I recently changed from heating oil to gas. I now have a tank of heating oil that is about 3/4 full. I want to sell the oil, but i don’t know how much oil i actually have. Its a standard tank in my basement. PLEASE HELP.

The most common oil tank in the US is 275 US Gallons.Oil companies will not usually buy the last 30-50 gallons in the tank because of sludge.

In the US, a standard oval-shaped tank is rated to hold 275 gallons when completely full. Typical actual capacity is around 250 gallons or so. If your gauge is accurate, you should have something around 200 gallons of oil if 3/4 full. Generally, give yourself about a 40 gallon leeway (~30-50 hours of use depending on the size of the burner) to make sure you get your next delivery before it runs out.

Oil burns at 130,000 BTU/Gallon. You can determine the amount of burn time you have by dividing 130,000 by the input capacity of the boiler and multiplying that number times the (approximate) gallons of oil in the tank. Example: A 100,000 *input* btu boiler will burn 260 hours on 200 gallons of fuel. A 150,000 btu boiler will burn for about 173 hours, 20 minutes.

Around here, oil-recovery companies are paying about $0.90/gallon for residual oil. Some charities will give you credit at about $2/gallon (tax deduction), so ask yourself whether you need the money or could use the tax deduction. Contact your local LIHEAP office for information on that last option.
