Who would be the best next addition for the resurgent Browns? Hey, Tony!
We’d never take a holiday when it comes to emptying out the latest Browns mailbag — there’s just too many interesting questions.
1995 Jeep Wrangler with cooling issues?

I think my cooling issue relates to a bad fan clutch. However, I have a few questions as to how the fan and fan clutch work so I can narrow it down further and make sure I am fixing the appropriate part. My cooling system keeps the engine at the right temp for 20 minutes or so. However, when I idle to park, wait at a light, or in traffic it overheats slowly. This makes me think the coolant is not cooling fast enough in the radiator. Must be the fan or fan clutch right? The radiator, hoses, water pump, thermostat are all new. How does a mechanical fan work? Does it speed up and slow down to match the cooling needs of the engine? I don’t hear or see it cycle faster or slower as the engine heats up. It seems to spin at the same speed at all times. If it’s supposed to speed up as the engine warms up then I think I have found the problem.

Thanks for the help.

this could be a few different things but i don’t believe your mechanical fan is the issue. to answer your question about the speed the fan does not speed up depending on the cooling needs. what i believe to be your problem could be a plugged radiator. from your explanation above it seems as if the engine isnt receiving enough cooled water as it passes through the radiator. the cooling system is a very complex system to explain, however i hope that i helped you out
