Earth sheltered house with complete southern side in double pane glass. My grandfathers place is like that (in Waldo county) and the place never gets below 40- even last Feb- March. It does take another heat source to get it comfortable, but solar helps alot.

you shouldn’t, Maine is not a good place for solar in the first place. It will be a waste of your money because solar panels are expensive. It will take much too long for the savings in electricity or heating to compensate the cost of the system, if at all.

you’ll need a fairly large solar collector (not electric) array. If you have baseboard heating, or radient heating the plumbing will be fairly straightforward. You can also hook your collector system up to a radiator device that interfaces with your standard furnace.
You can also use solar air space heaters, but they work best in spring and fall.
There is no reason you shouldn’t be able to at least heat your hot water with solar, and space heating is also a viable option.
google heliodyne and you’ll get lots of info.

I checked on solar Panels for my home in the early 1980`s
I wrote a company in Lakeland, Florida
they told me if you live north of the Mason/Dixon line
solar heat will do very little good as heat,, you can heat water a little and recirculate thru. your water heater to help with the cost of heating really cold water. Like I say that was in 1982
(maybe something new has been built) since then——bill
I live in Central Indiana

You can use solar power to create electricity. You would need to have enough of them and nothing blocking them. You will also have to have them facing to the south so you can get the most sun light. Another bright point is if you create more electricity then you can use, you can sell it to the power company. One other option, if you have the land for it, is a wind turbine. It also will create electricity and all it takes is a little bit of wind.
