Home Heating System?
I’m looking for my first home. Can someone give me a quick crash course on Home Heating Systems. What should i look for. How should i inspect it. What are some Older models and what are some upgrades that are cost efficient and environmentally friendly? I’m looking in northern NJ area. Winters are cold. Thanks
Basically no, it’s too big of a question to answer here. But you should do some research in the area you are moving in to. The gas co., electric co., propane suppliers all have literature they can send you. The main thing is to compare apples to apples, or BTU’s in your case. Find the cost per BTU for each fuel, if that will be the main factor in buying a home. Efficiency and comfort have broad ranges within each fuel, for example: Gas/forced air furnace vs gas boiler w/radiators vs gas boiler w/ slab heat. Confused yet?
When you are considering buying a house, they will normally have listed on the info sheet what the last 12 months heat, lights, water, and garbage cost were, as well as the property taxes. For heating costs, take the total yearly heat cost divided by the homes square footage. This will give you the price per square foot to heat that house. Do the same on the next home you look at, and compare the “$/per sq ft”. The cheaper amount will be the more efficient home.
Hope I didn’t confuse you more…..
