Solar thermal for general use is so simple that anyone that could hammer a nail or run a soldering torch or a pipe wrench could do it. Even a caveman could do it. (sorry about that cave dudes)

I built a solar heater and cost me right at 100 dollars and even used free software from the internet and made blue prints so I could put it online so others could make one. I am a computer geek and if I can do it I am sure any one can.
